Prevention and control of canine Leishmaniasis
It has been amply demonstrated that the use of topical insecticides (especially pyrethrins and pyrethroids) in the form of collars or spot-on applications reduces the transmission of the disease and the prevalence of Leishmaniasis.
To control the disease it is important that infected and sick dogs are also treated with topical insecticides in order to prevent the transmission of the disease to uninfected dogs.
Finally, it is important to point out that this preventive measure can be used in conjunction with other interventions (vaccines), probably with synergetic effects (EFSA, 2016).
LETI has developed LetiFend®, the first vaccine against canine Leishmaniasis developed in Europe with a chimeric protein, and it provides veterinarians with a totally safe tool.
